LONDON, Jan. 4 (UPI) — The United States was urged to wage a trade war against European Union nations, diplomatic cables released by the Web site WikiLeaks indicate.

In a leaked 2007 cable, the U.S. ambassador to France advised President George W. Bush to retaliate against the reluctance of EU nations to accept genetically modified crops, CBS reported Tuesday.

The EU’s stance threatened to cut off a key export market for American farmers.

In a message to Bush, Ambassador Craig Stapleton suggested the U.S. government “calibrate a target retaliation list that causes some pain across the EU since this is a collective responsibility, but that also focuses in part on the worst culprits.”

Stapleton went on to say the list should be sustainable over the long term “since we should not expect an early victory.”

Other cables released by WikiLeaks suggested U.S. diplomats were pushing genetically modified crops on reluctant trade partners.

Their efforts included lobbying the Vatican to drop its opposition to the food.
