The Australian attorney general’s response to an open letter to the Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard re Julian Assange

Below is a copy of  the letter sent to NSW Supreme court lawyer Peter Kemp from the Attorney General, in response to Peter’s open letter to the Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, in regards to Julian Assange and Wikileaks.

While the below letter does acknowledge Mr Assange’s right to consular assistance and the right to return to Australia, it does not state how this is being facilitated by the Australian Government.  Further, the word ‘illegal’ is conspicously absent in reference to Assange and has been replaced by words such as ‘reckless, irresponsible and potentially dangerous’.

Ironically these are all words that may be used to describe the ‘coalition of the willing’s’ decision to invade Afghanistan and Iraq.

The response from the Attorney General’s office also fails to address the legal issues and human rights issues raised by Peter Kemp.

WACA strongly urges all concerned people to comment on this letter via our website and then cut and paste that comment in to an email or letter to the Attorney General, contact details as follow:
